2028 can’t come soon enough as Mandarin Oriental builds a new luxury resort on Mexico’s Caribbean coastline

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced plans to manage a luxury resort on Mexico‘s Riviera Maya, set to open in 2028. The development, located on the Yucatán Peninsula, will combine the group’s signature service with a design that honors the local environment and culture. The project also involves acclaimed Mexican artist Bosco Sodi, who will serve as the art curator, adding a unique artistic dimension to the resort.

Situated within the 680-acre Kanai masterplan, the resort is strategically located 30 minutes from Cancun Airport and 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen. The resort will be part of a secure gated community surrounded by a protected mangrove reserve and pristine jungle. Only nine percent of the land is allocated for construction, ensuring minimal environmental impact and a commitment to preserving local wildlife.

The property will feature 120 guest rooms and suites, each with private pools and views of the Caribbean Sea. Natural materials such as marble, wood, and leather will be used to create seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces. The resort will also include 50 branded residences, with exclusive access to a private beach club for residents.

Beautiful Design at Mandarin Oriental Kanai

The design of Mandarin Oriental Kanai will be led by Migdal Arquitectos from Mexico City, drawing inspiration from Mayan architecture to blend harmoniously with the environment. New York’s Meyer Davis studio will handle the interiors, incorporating art curated by Bosco Sodi to create a tranquil, luxurious setting. The landscape will be designed by Maat Handasa, and Esrawe Studio will contribute to the Spa and Beach Club’s distinctive design elements.

Bosco Sodi’s involvement as the art curator will further enhance the resort’s aesthetic, combining the Wabi Sabi philosophy with Mayan traditions. His approach is expected to create spaces that invite reflection and connection with the natural surroundings.

Mandarin Oriental will introduce a diverse range of dining experiences, from internationally inspired dishes to local culinary creations using ingredients sourced from the region. The resort will feature several dining venues, including a beach club, café, and pool bar. Additionally, elegant indoor and outdoor spaces will be available for weddings and other events.

Leisure and Wellness Offerings

For leisure activities, the resort will offer three outdoor pools, family-friendly and adults-only areas, and a variety of water sports through the beach club. A comprehensive Kid’s Club will also provide an array of activities for younger guests.

The resort will feature a full-service spa, offering a wide range of wellness and beauty treatments, including services inspired by Mexican traditions. The wellness area will include an indoor lap pool and outdoor spa trails, providing a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. Mandarin Oriental’s signature spa programs will be complemented by offerings tailored to the region’s cultural heritage.

Riviera Maya is known for its rich Mayan heritage and access to historical landmarks like Chichen Itza and Tulum. Mandarin Oriental will offer curated experiences that allow guests to explore these cultural sites while also enjoying the region’s exciting culinary scene.
